Milk and its Importance

26th of November 1921 the day we got Dr.Verghese Kurien -father of white revolution in India. Under his supervision India became world’s largest milk producer. He is known as a founder cum establisher of AMUL in India. This day is celebrated as a tribute to the action of operation flood, initiated by Dr. Kurien in 1970 to establish white revolution. 

If you ask why there was a need to perform white revolution; It’s an attempt to make India a self-dependant country in milk production which is even endorsed by Wikipedia where it mentions India as the largest producer of Milk and exporter of skimmed milk globally. 

  • But why milk ??????? 

    Milk is a white nutritious fluid produced by the mammary gland of mammals to induce the growth and development in young mammals, before they can start their journey to grab the solid foods. 

    Milk as a wholesome nutrition that we feed on from mother up to 2 yrs at max. Then there is a hike in the demand of this wholesome nutrition to grow healthy. Then we need to procure it from other sources. 
    Understanding of this fact and actual need of milk for our growth and development, there is an ever-increasing demand for dairy products within India. 

    In many cultures especially India people continue to consume milk beyond infancy as a preliminary food product. This has remained recorded by or sculptures from the ages of Rama, Krishna  uptill now.  
    Milk producers are not targeting the milk alone , they also cater the need of other dairy products by converting this milk to curd, cheese, paneer, ghee and other products which has their benefits. 

  • What Are Its Benefits ?
    • Milk is an excellent source of Protein, vitamins and minerals , including nutrients like potassium, vit-B12, calcium, vit-D, vit-A, magnesium , zinc and thiamine   
    • It helps to boost bone health by adding its contribution as a source of calcium and phosphorous along with vit-D. Lactose intolerants develop a compulsive bone health deficiency after late 30s. 
    • It’s protein contributes a healthy lifestyle and manage your weight till to a mark. 
    • It’s a versatile ingredient can easily be a component to smoothies, oatmeal, coffee, soups, gravies, porridges etc. 
    • Research claims, *Use of dairy with a healthy eating trials develops protective effect of milk for stroke.  
    • *World cancer research fund witnessed the patients who have a regular dairy practice from early ages have a low risk to colon cancer.

Milk and milk products are not only full of macro nutrients, it’s importance is bolstered by 3 additional nutrients: Calcium, vitamin-A ,B12, and Iodine. These micro nutrients can help in managing the deficiency in case of osteoporosis, anemia, and thyroid.

Have we ever noticed why there is always mix of cereals and milk together e.g: kheer( rice + milk), oats porridge, ragi porridge, shakes, etc where the cereals lack in few amino acids can be completed with milk as an additive and hence can make it a complete platter.  
Milk is a nutrient – rich mineral loaded beverage that benefits our health in several ways. 
Let’s believe the idea of Dr. Kurien to make India a milk sustainable country.
